If there is one point on the face of the Earth where freedom should be defended more vigorously and successfully than anywhere else, it is Charlottesville, VA and the surrounding areas. This region, aside from its breathtaking natural beauty, is a veritable “cradle of liberty,” having produced three presidents – two of whom, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, were so pivotal in crafting America’s founding documents.
Charlottesville is most associated with Jefferson, for it was here that he conceived of, designed, and supervised the construction of the University of Virginia, the world’s first secular institution of higher learning, largely for the purpose of advancing liberty:
“This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it… (w)hich I contemplate as the future bulwark of the human mind in this hemisphere.”
Given this rich legacy, one might assume that Charlottesville remains a magnet for those who revere and are willing to fight for liberty, against all the forces in America and beyond that are working so diligently to undermine, and ultimately destroy it.
Unfortunately, this is not the case.
Friends of Thomas is an idea for an organization that will fight for liberty on a robust intellectual basis, and have fun doing it.
Stay tuned for a formal announcement, and details.
